Quantity discount - settings/targeting

Quantity discounts are currently in early access. If something doesn't work as you expect, or you miss a setting, please contact us. We'd love to hear your feedback.

A Quantity discount gives customers a bigger discount when they buy more items. For example: 10% off 2 items, 15% off 3–4 items and 20% off 5 items or more.

The discount applies automatically in the cart and at checkout, so customers don't need a code. On the product page, the quantity discount table shows the tiers and the price per item, so customers see how much they save before they add items to the cart:

1. Create the campaign

Go to Campaigns → Create campaign and choose Quantity discount.

The campaign form opens. Here is an overview of its settings. The steps below go through them one by one.

2. Name your campaign

Enter a Title. Customers see it in their cart and at checkout, so describe the offer, for example "Buy more, save more".

3. Set the discount tiers

In Discount tiers, first choose the Discount type:

  • Percentage: for example, 10% off each item.

  • Fixed: an amount off each item, for example $2 off each.

All tiers of one campaign use the same discount type.

Then fill in each tier:

  • Minimum quantity: how many items the customer needs to buy to get this tier.

  • Discount value: how big the discount is.

Click Add tier to add the next one. You can add up to 10 tiers. The first tier starts at 2 items or more, and each next tier needs a higher minimum quantity and a bigger discount than the one before.

The customer gets the highest tier they reach, and the tier discount applies to every item, not only to the items above the minimum.

Example:

With this setup, a customer who buys 5 items gets 20% off all 5.

Minimum quantity

Discount value

2

10% off

3

15% off

5

20% off

Additionally, you can choose one tier that gets the “Most popular” badge in the table.

4. Choose how items are counted

In How items are counted, decide which items add up toward a tier:

  • Any mix of products: items from different products add up.

  • Same product, any variant: each product counts separately; all its variants (for example, sizes and colors) add up.

  • Same variant only: only items of the same variant add up.

Example. The campaign targets T-shirts and mugs, with a tier at 3 items. The cart has 2 T-shirts in size S, 1 T-shirt in size M and 1 mug.

How items are counted

What the customer gets

Any mix of products

4 items count, so all 4 items get the discount

Same product, any variant

3 T-shirts count, so the T-shirts get the discount and the mug doesn't

Same variant only

Only 2 T-shirts in size S count. That's below 3, so there is no discount

5. Set discount targets and exclusions

In Campaign targets, choose which products get the discount: Specific products, Collections, Vendors or Tags.

A quantity discount is always set on whole products: all variants of a selected product are included.

To leave some products out, tick Exclude certain products from the discount campaign in Campaign exclusions and choose the products, collections, vendors or tags to exclude. This way, only targeted items that are not excluded count toward a tier and get the discount.

Note on collections. Use collections that are available on the Online Store sales channel. If a selected collection isn't available there, the table won't appear on the pages of its products (the discount still applies in the cart and at checkout). If an excluded collection isn't available there, its products may still show the table, but they won't get the discount.

6. Choose who gets the discount

In Eligibility, choose All customers, Markets, Specific customers or Customer tags. You can also tick Exclude certain customer tags.

The quantity discount table is shown only to customers who get the discount. For example, if the campaign is for customers with the "VIP" tag, guests and other customers don't see the table.

7. Set combination rules

In Combinations, decide whether the quantity discount can be combined with other Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts.

Right now, quantity discounts have no automatic way to exclude items already on sale. The discount is calculated from the product’s current price. If a product is already on sale (in a “Price reduction” campaign or with a compare-at price you set manually), customers get both discounts.

8. Schedule your campaign

In Campaign schedule, activate the campaign immediately, set a start and end time, run it weekly or monthly, or leave it inactive for now.

9. Check & adjust the table settings

In the right column, the Quantity discount table card shows how the table will appear in your store. Most of the design, texts and placement of the table are shared by all quantity discount campaigns and can be edited in Widgets → Quantity discount table.

To set up the table and add it to your theme, see Showing the quantity discount table on product pages.

If one campaign needs its own heading or description, tick Use different texts for this campaign and edit the Heading and Description. To go back to the shared text, click Reset.

10. Save and check your store

Click Save. Open a product from the campaign in your store and check the table, then add items to the cart and check the discount.

Important notes

  • Quantity discounts apply on top of sale prices. The discount is calculated from the product's current price. If a product is already on sale (in a “Price reduction” campaign or with a compare-at price you set manually), customers get both discounts.

  • Shopify allows up to 25 active automatic discounts per store, and quantity discounts count toward this limit. The limit is shared by all your discount apps. If you've reached it, deactivate some automatic discounts to activate new ones.
