Earning rules define how customers earn points in your loyalty program. They are the foundation of engagement, allowing you to reward actions that matter most - like purchases, account creation, or marketing interactions.
In Alpha Loyalty, earning rules are program-based. This means you first create a program, define its target audience, and then configure how users in that program can earn points.
For example, if you want your B2B and B2C customers to earn different points for specific actions, you can create two separate programs for them.
Now, let’s walk through the process of creating earning rules.
Step 1: Create a program and navigate to its settings
Go to your Alpha Loyalty dashboard and click Add points program or click on any existing program.
Step 2: Choose the rule type
Alpha Loyalty supports four types of earning rules, each configured separately:
Purchase-based: Award points for placing orders
Account creation: Reward customers for signing up for an account
Birthday reward: Give points on a customer’s birthday
Email subscriptions: Reward customers for newsletter sign-ups
In your program settings, all available methods are listed with toggle buttons to enable or disable them for this program.
By clicking the gear icon next to a method, you can configure its specific settings.
Step 3: Configure the selected rule
Each earning rule has its own detailed configuration. Click through to follow the specific guide you are interested in:
Step 4: Activate the rules
Once you’ve configured each earning rule, review all settings to ensure they are correct. Then, switch the toggle button to enable each rule.
Activating a rule does not make it live for customers by itself. Rules only start applying when the program they belong to is activated. However, enabling rules allows them to appear in your Loyalty Widget for preview and testing.
Step 5: Configure the Ways to earn section description
If you want to give more context about the earning rules, you can also use Top and Bottom messages, which are configured in each program's settings.
Step 6: Preview
After configuring the rules and section descriptions, click More actions -> Preview on top of the program settings page to see exactly how your earning rules will appear to customers in the Loyalty Widget.
Step 7: Activate the program
After you are satisfied with the rules and section descriptions, finish setting up the program and activate it. Once the program is active, all enabled earning rules within it will automatically apply whenever customers meet the criteria.
Step 8: Monitor and optimize
Once your program is live, you can track activity through the Activity dashboard to see who is earning points and how often.
Later you may also want to test variations by adjusting point values or conditions to find out what drives the most engagement. Remember, your earning rules aren’t set in stone - they can be edited, paused, or refined at any time to better align with your overall program strategy.
