A quantity discount doesn't change your product prices - it functions as a standard Shopify automatic discount. When the customer adds enough items to the cart, the automatic discount applies in the cart and at checkout.
Here is what's worth knowing before you set one up.
The highest tier applies to every item
When the customer adds items to the cart, Alpha Sale counts them and applies the highest tier they reach. The tier discount applies to every counted item, not only to the ones above the previous tier.
Example.
Tiers: 2 items — 10% off, 5 items — 20% off. A customer adds 4 items and gets 10% off each. When they add a 5th item, all 5 items get 20% off.
Items are counted the way you chose in the campaign settings: either all items together, each product separately, or each variant separately. Products that are not campaign targets, or are excluded, don't count and don't get the discount.
The discount is calculated from the current price
A quantity discount doesn't change your product prices. It reduces the price of each item in the cart, starting from the item's current price. So if the product is already on sale, the two discounts add up.
Example.
A product has Compare-at price = $100 and Price = $80. The quantity discount gives 10% off for 3 items or more. Each of 3 items then costs $72.
If you don't want this to happen, exclude products on sale from the quantity discount (for example, by a collection or a tag).
Exact amounts, the same in the table and in the cart
The table on the product page and the cart use the same calculation, so the customer pays exactly what the table shows:
With a percentage discount, the price per item is rounded up to the cent.
With a fixed discount, the amount is set in your store currency. For customers who shop in another currency, it's converted and rounded down.
The discount is never bigger than the item price. A 100% tier, or a fixed amount larger than the price, makes the item free.
One quantity discount table for all campaigns of a product
You can add the same product to several quantity discount campaigns. In the cart, the customer gets the biggest discount available for the number of items they buy.
So that the product page shows the same offer, the quantity discount table combines all campaigns the product is in. For every number of items, the table shows the best discount from any of these campaigns.
Example. A T-shirt is in two campaigns:
"All T-shirts" | 2 items — 10% off, 5 items — 20% off |
"Summer sale" | 3 items — 15% off |
The product page of this T-shirt shows one table:
Quantity | Discount | From campaign |
Buy 2 | 10% off | All T-shirts |
Buy 3–4 | 15% off | Summer sale |
Buy 5+ | 20% off | All T-shirts |
In this case, the heading, the description and the “Most popular” badge come from the campaign that was created first.
Usual combination rules apply
A quantity discount is a product discount in Shopify, so the usual combination rules apply, which you can adjust in your campaign settings. Choose if you want the quantity discount to combine with:
Other product discounts (for example, an in-cart product discount on the same item): if the discounts can be combined, only the largest one applies to the item.
Order discounts: if both discounts allow it, the quantity discount applies first, and then the order discount applies to the new total.
Shipping discounts: both apply if both allow it.
